Susan L. MacLaurin, CFA, joined QuadReal in December 2016. As Chief Communications Officer, her responsibilities include building and fortifying an internal and external culture of service while supporting colleagues with the resources they require to represent the company successfully.

Susan brings over 31 years’ experience in real estate. Susan was formerly Executive Vice President, Portfolio Management with GWL Realty Advisors, where she was responsible for relationship management with BCI. Previous positions included portfolio management with a Canadian pension plan, private real estate development, and commissioned real estate sales.

Susan holds a B.A. from Bryn Mawr College, an MBA from the University of Toronto, and is a member of the Institute of Corporate Directors, completing the Directors Education Program in 2007. Susan is a member of the CARE Canada Board, an organization helping to unlock a gender-just future.

Marta has over 30 years of experience representing developers, landlords and tenants in commercial real estate leasing matters and has acted for some of Canada’s leading developers. Marta has joined BLG’s National Leasing Centre and her practice will be primarily focused on this team.

Marta assists national clients across a broad range of industries with:

  • commercial leasing
  • construction contracts
  • purchase and sale of commercial real estate
  • financing of office, industrial, retail and mixed-use commercial property

Marta joined the firm having practiced commercial leasing, real estate and construction law with a leading mid-sized firm in Toronto, representing local and national clients.

Prior to that, Marta spent over 13 years as VP, National Legal Affairs at First Capital Realty, one of Canada’s largest shopping centre developers. She was responsible for all legal aspects of the company’s business operations, from acquisition, development, construction, leasing and property management, co-ownership and development management agreements.

Marta has assisted clients in the negotiation of CCDC and non-CCDC contracts for residential and commercial projects, and in the preparation of precedent construction contracts for Ontario condominium developments.

Beth Kapusta is a Toronto-based design excellence consultant. She advises government and institutional clients on achieving design excellence on major architectural and capital commissions, specializing in complex transit projects. Beth also works with architecture firms on design strategy and project pursuits.

As a principal at Brook McIlroy Inc. and as an independent consultant, she has provided guidance documents and process for some of Toronto’s most significant transit initiatives, including the Relief Line South, the Scarborough Subway Extension, and Regional Express Rail.

From 2013 to 2016, she headed up Metrolinx’s Design Excellence program, earning the provincial agency a reputation for leading with design on major transit projects. With a mandate to elevate quality and customer focus across capital projects, she shaped design of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT and the vision for the Davenport Diamond guideway and greenway. Her team spearheaded a region-wide transit wayfinding harmonization initiative, an integrated art program and a design review panel for Metrolinx projects.

Prior to joining Metrolinx, Beth worked to influence the urban realm as a strategic collaborator on numerous competition- and award-winning designs, including June Callwood Park, Sugar Beach, HTO park and Ivey School of Business.

During her 20-year career as an architecture critic, she wrote on architecture, sustainability and design for publications from the Huffington Post to The Globe and Mail. She began her writing career at Canadian Architect, overseeing its award-winning re-design, later becoming a contributing editor for Azure magazine. She co-authored Yolles: A Canadian Engineering Legacy, and taught at the University of Waterloo School of Architecture, where she received her B.Arch in 1991.

Outside work, Beth founded Toronto’s first urban vegetable garden tour. Mother of a 21-year-old daughter, she is an accomplished rock climber and avid cyclist.

Shirley Hoy’s public service career has spanned more than 30 years.

She started her career in municipal public service in 1980 with the former Metro Toronto government, Department of Community Services, in the Policy and Planning division. In the late 1980’s, within Metro, she assumed various positions, including General Manager of Administration/Corporate Secretary, at Exhibition Place, and Executive Director in the Metro Chairman’s Office.

Between 1991 to the end of 1995, Shirley worked in the Ontario Government as Assistant Deputy Minister in 3 ministries – Ontario Women’s Directorate, Ministry of Community & Social Services, and the Joint position of ADM of Operation, and CEO of the Ontario Housing Corporation, in the Ministry of Housing.

In 1996, Shirley returned to Metro, as the Commissioner of Community Services. Following amalgamation, Shirley was appointed the Commissioner of Community and Neighbourhood Services Department which included the following major services: social assistance, childcare, homes for the aged, emergency shelter, housing and support, parks and recreation, public health and library services.

Between 2001 to 2008, Shirley served as City Manager for the City of Toronto. In this role, she led the public service in providing advice to the Mayor and City Council on the City’s fiscal, organizational and service responsibilities, and in ensuring the efficient and effective delivery of municipal programs and services.

Between 2009 to January 2014, Shirley completed a 5-year term with the Toronto Lands Corporation, a wholly owned subsidiary of the Toronto District School Board, responsible for managing and disposing of surplus school properties. In this 5-year period, a total of $350 million in revenues was realized as contribution to the School Board’s capital budget.

From 2010 to 2012, she also served on the board of the Ontario Lottery & Gaming Corporation, and the Board of Regents of Victoria University, U of T.

In November, 2014, Shirley served on the Transition Team for Mayor-elect, John Tory.

From Mid March to August 2015, Shirley was appointed to the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) Governance Advisory Panel by the Minister of Education to examine and make recommendations with respect to possible improvements to TDSB governance structure and processes.

Since November 2014, Shirley has been working as Senior Advisor with StrategyCorp.

With respect to community and volunteer activities, Shirley served 3 years as vice-chair of the Governing Council of the University of Toronto, and served as Chair for the term 2016-2017. She was a member of the Board of Trustees of United Way Toronto and York Region for 6 years, and chair of this Board from June 2017 to July 2018.

In July, 2017, Shirley was appointed to the board of the Institute of Municipal Finance and Governance (IMFG).

In September, 2018, she was appointed as a public member on the Quality Committee of the Board of Unity Health Toronto –a network which includes Providence Healthcare, St. Joseph’s Health Centre, and St. Michael’s Hospital.

Prior to joining Holland Bloorview as President and CEO in 2015, I spent 9 years at Ryerson University, first as General Counsel and Secretary of the Board of Governors and then as Vice-President, Administration and Finance during a pivotal time including the development of the DMZ (a global leader in university-based entrepreneurship), the transformation of the former Maple Leaf Gardens into the Mattamy Athletic Centre, the development of Ryerson’s gateway on Yonge Street—the Sheldon and Tracy Levy Student Learning Centre—and the People First strategy through which I established the university’s inaugural lead for diversity, equity and inclusion. I was also interim Dean of the G. Raymond Chang School of Continuing Education where I championed digital education and access to university for marginalized students.

I honed my expertise in public policy with roles in the Ontario government as Counsel to the Deputy Attorney General, Counsel and Special Advisor to two Secretaries of Cabinet and Chief of Staff to the Attorney General of Ontario.

A lawyer by training with law degrees from McGill University and the Columbia Law School, following graduation I clerked at the Supreme Court of Canada. I have held Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada and Fulbright Fellowships.

In 2018, 2019 and 2020 I was named one of Canada’s Top 100 most Powerful Women and in 2020 was inducted in the Women’s Executive Network Canada’s Most Powerful Women Top 100 Hall of Fame.

I am active on numerous volunteer boards focused on research and academic excellence, access to technology and innovation and children’s health.
